Do Not Demolish! Creative Intervention through Video Action Research and Pedagogy is a comprehensive study of a new methodology that makes critical interventions in both pedagogy and research, and the intersections of both.

The methodology, entitled Video Action Pedagogy and Research (VAPR) emerges from classroom practice and is applicable in the field. Video Action Pedagogy and Research intersects video production and media-art practice with action oriented visual pedagogy and research. The project uses principles from arts-based inquiry or the understanding that art is inquiry.

To employ the VAPR methodology, I first co-created an advanced composition course entitled Writing with Video at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. The course positions students as media authors and researchers. Next, the pedagogical practices were developed into methods for the research field. The processes are used to investigate an actual event, in this case, the repercussions of Hurricane Katrina as told through the stories of one 84-year-old man who struggles to rebuild his home in the Lower 9th Ward neighborhood of New Orleans. The resulting mixed media art and research project: Perseverance: The House the Wizard Built...Again serves as one example of how video can be employed to trouble issues of representation and how it emerged from the re-presentation of pedagogy as an action oriented research process.

This dissertation investigates a methodology that uses media, art and an action-oriented epistemology as a method of collecting pragmatic and experiential evidence of issues related to social justice. The project also considers the impact on the learner and subject matter when a pedagogical scheme positions students as both researchers and authors of media production that centers on lived experiences. Finally, the project studies the value to teaching, learning and research when multiple disciplines---such as art, education, communications, and cultural studies are integrated.

The dissertation unfolds in four parts. Part one addresses how art and artists may inform social and educational research and how visual pedagogy may be used to dismantle oppressive problems of representation. Part two articulates the Video Action Pedagogy and Research methods. Part three shares descriptive narratives and reflections surrounding audiovisual data collected in New Orleans over the course of 19 months. The final section points to revelations that occurred performing the VAPR processes and suggests how this process of knowledge production maybe used and disseminated.
