This dissertation explains a research project that investigated 50 sermons delivered by Evangelical preachers in a small town in southwestern Ethiopia. The project included recording, transcribing, and analyzing oral Amharic sermons that were delivered by numerous preachers from several denominations. Employing a grounded theory approach, the researcher combined elements of line-by-line discourse analysis and ethnography to develop a culturally sensitive understanding of these religious discourses.

Having presented in three chapters the most prominent techniques from the data, the dissertation proposes a statement of theory to explain why the preachers speak as they do. This statement, appearing in the form of a definition of preaching, makes explicit the strategy and values that have existed previously only implicitly in the minds of these preachers. The theory emerged from the analysis of the data as it was analyzed in light of situational and cultural factors. The resulting statement revolves around four core ideas: (1) The preacher presents himself and must be seen by his worshipers as a Spirit-filled man of God. (2) The preacher's goal is to produce for the audience a direct encounter with God's presence resulting in audience response in the directions advocated by the message. (3) The preacher delivers a biblically based message. (4) The preacher's method centers on a passionate delivery that will stimulate audience participation.

With the statement of theory in place, the dissertation explores connections between this proposed theory and existing theories in the disciplines of homiletics, narrative, orality, and education. Elements of each of these four disciplines are seen to offer additional insight into the author's proposed theory. The final chapter of the dissertation presents several implications for those who are teaching homiletics in a context like Ethiopia or in one like North America. Several implications suggest areas for additional research.
