The problem. The purpose of the study was to explore the activities of five chief executives of Japanese companies by analysis from observation. In 1973, Mintzberg published The Nature of Managerial Work---a study of a week in the working lives of five chief executives. This study referred to the categories that he had made in structured observation. The categories in this study were changed due to the advent of the information technology, particularly the new electronic media of communication. The observations of this study offer insight into the traditional Japanese management system of building mutual trust at the following levels: (1) president-employee, and (2) employee-employee.

Method. The structured observation of seven research methods (secondary sources, interview and questionnaire, critical incident and sequence of episodes, diary, activity sampling, unstructured observation, and structured observation) was used to study president's work. Observational studies of managerial work have provided empirical evidence of the actual nature of a president's work. The observations focused on two presidents of public service companies in Japan, one president of a public manufacturing company in Japan, and two presidents of private manufacturing companies in Japan; each were observed for one week (five working days).

Result. Twenty four findings about the behavior and activities of the five presidents observed were made. These twenty four findings were categorized into four theories as follows: Theory 1: President-Employee Relations, Theory 2: Long-Term Plan for Stable Employment, Theory 3: Company's Internal Environment, and Theory 4: Behavior of President.
