Regulation of the Ras/MAPK pathway is integral for cell fate and function. A cell can regulate this pathway in a number of ways: through changes in the levels of positive ligands, addition of inhibitors, temporal regulation of activation, and localization of the downstream effectors in the cell (to name a few). We report here for the first time another mode of regulation of the Ras/MAPK pathway through phosphorylation of Ras/MAPK effectors in Drosophila melanogaster. Phosphorylated MAPK (pMAPK) is a key protein activated downstream of Ras, and regulates cell division and differentiation depending on whether it is localized in the nucleus or cytoplasm respectively. This study shows that inhibition of phosphorylation of MAPK in both wings and eyes affects differentiation and cell growth but does not affect division Inhibition of the Ras/MAPK is used as a mechanism for controlling tumor growth by many cancer drugs. Taken together, the results might be an answer to the variability in the efficacy of a cancer drug in many tumor types.
