Thesis (M.S.)--The University of Texas at San Antonio, 2010.
When learning new information in a text, how do learning strategies relate to the higher-level processes used for comprehending text? For example, do elaborative strategies, such as imagery, yield superior performance on measures of higher-level processes when compared to organizational strategies? The present study examined the influences of learning strategies on individual differences in performance on measures of higher-level processes. Our measure of higher-level processes was Hannon and Daneman's (2001) component processes task, a task that measured four component processes of reading comprehension: text memory, text inferencing, knowledge access, and knowledge integration. Rereading was found to be the only significant predictor of performance on the component processes task, and the use of rereading was associated with lower performance.
