Few studies have examined how funeral directors perceive continuing professional education, particularly what meaning funeral directors make of their continuing education experiences. This study is important because the perceptions of practitioners in the field regarding continuing professional education for licensed funeral directors have not been heard. The purpose, and guiding research question, of this study was to understand how funeral directors perceive continuing education. A phenomenological approach was selected to listen to the participants and build an understanding based on their experiences and ideas. For this study, 10 participants were purposefully selected from a population of 220 licensed funeral directors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Analysis included thematic coding which resulted in 6 themes reflecting the participants' essence in participating in a continuing education program: support of continuing education, program atmosphere, program content, basis for choosing programs, changes in the field, and use of continuing education knowledge. The findings of this study indicated that funeral directors favor continuing professional education and recognize the value of enhancing their professional skills and knowledge. As respected community leaders called upon in life's most stressful moments, funeral directors who are lifelong learners can assist the public with better understanding the meaning of death and educate the public on alternative funeral options that meet their needs and wants. The implications for positive social change can result in how society copes with death. Through continuing professional education, better educated funeral directors can contribute to the public's understanding of grief, provide additional ways to promote healing, and help families adjust to loss by offering essential aftercare services.
