Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'I at Manoa, 2010.
This dissertation is a study of the ethics of pluralism and the politics of community, democracy, and justice in Israel. In particular, I ask: how did the Levant, a space of intersecting and overlapping identities, come to be a space divided by the ethnic-nationalist violence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? What underlying commitments frame the international community's response to violence and security/insecurity in Israel as one that necessitates a two-state solution? In answering these questions, I sought to expand the traditional or ethno-nationalist focus of the peace process to ask not only how discourses of identity politics, both in Israel and the United States, have limited the range of options for both Palestinians and Israelis, but also to ask how transnational and aesthetic analysis of violence and militarization contribute to the (re)articulation of an alternative imaginary for Israel/Palestine. As such, this scholarship speaks equally to international relations theory scholarship, and to the literature on transnationalism and processes of globalization.
