This study explores how high school students with special needs view and use the high school library. Two factors triggered this study: The first was the importance of school libraries in raising student test scores, as shown in the studies by Keith Lance and his colleagues. The second was the reluctance of some of my students with special needs to utilize their school library.

Students with special needs were surveyed and interviewed. Their responses were analyzed through a combination of narrative inquiry and content analysis methodologies. Helpful tools included ATLAS.ti, Microsoft Excel, and OmniOutliner.

In this study, noise-level preference and perception was the single most powerful predictor of whether students feel welcome in the library, and whether they use it voluntarily and frequently. Where possible, libraries should incorporate: (1) Quiet zones for students who prefer quiet (2) Social zones for students working collaboratively (3) A large collection of books at a wide range of reading levels, covering subjects the students need or enjoy (4) Computers with high speed Internet access and up-to-date hardware and software (5) Well-qualified, helpful, and approachable librarians.

The library is an important tool for achieving educational equity for students with special needs. It is a disservice to them, and to their potentiality as enlightened human beings, if their learning stops outside the library door.
