This study investigates two hypotheses considering the role of syllable-based information in speech recognition in quiet and noisy conditions. In the first experiment conducted in quiet, syllable onsets were replaced in sentences by noise to assess their contribution to overall sentence recognition. Remaining phonetic segments were left unaltered. In noise-corrupted sentences, syllable-onsets were replaced from clean sentences to assess their contribution to overall sentence recognition in noise. The same experiments were repeated in the second study for stressed syllables instead of syllable onsets. Overall, listening studies conducted in quiet revealed a significant reduction in speech intelligibility in the absence of syllabic information. Similarly, listening studies conducted in noise revealed a significant improvement in speech intelligibility when syllabic information was present. The outcomes from the present thesis suggest that speech enhancement algorithms can potentially improve speech intelligibility if these algorithms enhance the information present in syllable onsets or in stressed syllables.
