Within this thesis I investigate how Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) can effectively support actors in the pursuit of embodied performance, and myself in all the various applications of my creative practice: teaching, coaching and directing. My aim is to contribute to the body of literature that deals with the practices of actor training by sharing my own experiences of using the LMA system as tool for both teaching and directing.

520 $a In outlining the historical context and development of Laban Movement Analysis, and subsequent applications, I hope to draw attention to the key principles embedded within LMA that support the application of the system in theatre training and performance. By examining both the implicit and explicit influence of Laban on actor training and practice in both the United Kingdom and North America I explore the divergent paths that LMA has taken in theatrical practice within these different cultures. Finally, I share my own applications of LMA in support of training student actors and in coaching professional actors.
520 $a The result is intended to offer theatre practitioners and those who train them an example of how Laban Movement Analysis can be applied to the training of actors and a rehearsal process, in order to facilitate a holistic approach towards embodied performance.
