Thesis (Psy.D.)--St. John's University (New York), 2011.
Utilizing a multiple baseline design, this study sought to determine the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral intervention on the reduction of symptomatology of female adolescents with a history of physical and/or sexual abuse. Combining aspects of TF-CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing, PARTNERS with TEENS sought to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression and improve affect regulation. A total of 12 participants, adolescents and their caregivers, were recruited for the study, nine participants signed consent and completed all baseline evaluations, and six completed PARTNERS with TEENS. It was hypothesized that symptoms during the baseline phase would remain consistent and that the introduction of specific treatment components would be associated with improvements in the symptoms that these components were targeted to address. The examination of pre-treatment evaluations indicated no significant change in symptoms between and within subjects during each baseline phase. Thus, regardless of assessment condition, baseline symptoms remained steady. Results demonstrated decreases in PTSD and depressive symptoms among some of the participants who completed treatment; however, no uniform patterns of symptom reduction emerge across treatment phases. Conceptualization of treatment, attrition, clinical implications, and future research recommendations are discussed.
