Relational aggression (RA) involves either indirect, verbal, or covert acts with the intent to humiliate, exclude peers from groups, and/or damage a peer's reputation and social status. RA is believed to be particularly devastating psychologically for adolescent girls, as they tend to form smaller and more intimate social groups. Unfortunately, RA often occurs undetected by school staff as victims may suffer in isolation. RA is reviewed from multiple research perspectives including psychosocial, moral, and social-cognitive development. Moreover, gender comparisons and effects of RA on friendship and popularity are examined. Potential similarities between adolescent narcissism and RA are explored as well. To reduce the prevalence and psychological and behavioral impact of RA, it is imperative that school staff---and school-based counselors in particular---become more knowledgeable about RA in terms of child development, antecedents, and effective counseling approaches. Suggestions regarding school-based counseling in working with victims and perpetrators of RA are discussed.
