The purpose of this study was to test the effect of a standard meal on cardiovascular and hemodynamic responses during submaximal treadmill exercise. Four males and four females completed two, 12-minute exercise sessions jogging at 60% of VO2 max after a standard meal (treatment) and fasting (control). The following dependent variables were examined: VO2, Q, SV, HR, a-vO2 diff, Kcal/min, SBP, DBP, MAP, SVR, MVO2 , VCO2, VE, Fb, TV, RER, and RPE. An ANOVA with repeated measures (SPSS, ver. 17) was used to compare the groups. A probability of p<0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Heart rate, DBP, MAP, and MVO2 were significantly decreased during postprandial exercise session, while RER significantly increased. These results indicated that the postprandial exercise session was easier on the heart than when fasting and performing the same exercise. Also, the increased RER indicates the postprandial exercise session used a larger percentage of carbohydrate at the cellular level than when the same exercise was performed fasting.
