After "Select Availability" was removed from GPS signals, civil GPS receivers were able to achieve an accuracy of 5-15 meters, and thus are widely used in vehicle navigation, land marking, track tracing, road surveying, precise timing, and geocaching. Nowadays, many median and high end mobile phones are equipped with GPS receivers. However, the high energy consumption of GPS receivers significantly affects phone battery life, and thus is a huge deterrent to their use. Since one of the primary applications on mobile phone is localization, and competing technologies like GSM localization is highly inaccurate, the use of GPS is an essential component of mobile phone system.

To remedy the above problem, this project designs and implements a localization system that exploits an accelerometer to augment a GPS on mobile phone platform. Inexpensive accelerometers are embedded in many mobile phones for better operatability and more impressive user experience. An accelerometer consumes much less energy than a GPS receiver. But it is not specifically designed for localization and is prone to noise, which renders it impossible to infer the acceleration and velocity directly. Therefore, we use a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to infer the acceleration and velocity based on latest accelerometer readings. As a statistical model widely used in temporal pattern recognition, an HMM is capable of calculating the most likely sequence of motion states (acceleration and velocity) reflected by the measurements. Furthermore, we integrate the accelerometer and GPS, and design an algorithm to evaluate the localization error over time. When the localization error exceeds a threshold set by a specific application, the GPS receiver takes a reading to negate the error. This tool has been implemented on HTC Fuze mobile phone with Windows CE 6.5 OS.
