Ultra High Frequency (UHF) passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems have attracted considerable attention in recent years in many applications in supply chain management as a way of tracking and tracing product inventory. Designing passive RFID systems for conveyor-based applications requires a solid understanding of how various system factors and associated electromagnetic physics affect readability of RFID tags in order to achieve a desired level of performance. However, RFID system design in current industrial practice is based on trial and error, while academic research is heavily focused on the cost and design of tags. Therefore, there is a need for RFID research that provides guiding principles to practitioners based on theoretical principles and experimental approaches for successful RFID system design, implementation and evaluation.

This research addresses critical issues and considerations in the design of conveyor-based RFID systems and investigates the effects of system design factors related to current practices of RFID system implementation based on quantitative analysis on various system factors. Our experimental approach considers four subsets of RFID system design parameters, namely tag performance evaluation, selection and configuration of reader and antenna, physical and operational considerations. Mathematical models are developed from a series of experiments containing a number of RFID system parameters and a decision support tool is developed based on the models, which incorporates a set of performance metrics and provides decision rules and optimized solutions that meet the system performance goals.
