The current study explored the factors that were related to entrepreneurial intention in Black adolescents. This study examined the extent to which entrepreneurial self-efficacy, racial identity, role models, and entrepreneurial education predicted entrepreneurial intention in Black adolescents. The relationship between perception of business obstacles and entrepreneurial intention was also explored. One hundred and eleven Black adolescents from Berkeley, California, ranging from 14 to 18 years of age, were administered the Entrepreneurial Intention Scale (Krueger & Reilly, 2000); Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy Scale (Wilson, Kickul, & Marlino, 2007); Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity-Teen Version (Sellers, Smith, Shelton, Rowley & Chavous, 1997); Entrepreneurial Education Questionnaire (Evans, 2008); Role Model Questionnaire (Auken & Stephens, 2006); Perception of Business Obstacles Questionnaire (Evans, 2008); Background Questionnaire (Evans, 2008); and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Support (Mitchell & Zimet, 2000).

A positive relationship was found among entrepreneurial intention, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, racial identity, role models, and entrepreneurial education. Findings showed that out of those factors, entrepreneurial education and role models played the largest role in predicting intention. Higher levels of entrepreneurial intention were found in adolescents who had role models, particularly those who owned businesses and among those who engaged in high levels of entrepreneurial activities. Study limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
