Irish Americans and Irish who live outside of Ireland have no extrinsic need to speak Irish for their day-to-day interactions. Yet in recent decades, changing attitudes toward Irish and a shift in the image of the language have shown a powerful and growing movement to learn, speak and teach Irish, in effect to revitalize a language that might otherwise fall into disuse. The revitalization occurring in the New York metropolitan area offers a unique place, vibrant in activity, in which to study this social and cultural phenomenon. This dissertation examines the activities and revitalization efforts taking place in the New York area and analyzes the impact learning and speaking Irish has on one's identity. Conducted as an observational case study over eighteen months from 2008 to 2009, this study focused on interviews with eighteen participants who are teachers, learners, and leaders in the Irish community in New York. The pathways to their participation are explored, as well as their motivations for making a continued investment in learning Irish as a means to solidify membership in the Irish language community. Findings show that the connection participants feel to the Irish network through their language learning experiences shifts an individual's perception and sense of Irishness. The greater the language proficiency, the greater one self-identifies as Irish. The study concludes that in order for revitalization to be more complete and sustaining, current efforts must be enhanced by teaching children in schools and at home, as well as creating environments where Irish is spoken naturally outside of planned events. This study serves as a point of departure for further research in Irish language revitalization efforts, particularly on best practices for teaching that align with national foreign language standards, and on what factors in addition to language may strengthen revitalization efforts.
