With exploiting end users' upload capacities to offload servers and facilitate data distributions, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology has recently enabled various large-scale streaming services on top of the best-effort Internet. These P2P networks, commonly forming a dedicated overlay consisting of a large number of independent nodes, are intrinsic large-scale complex distributed systems.

To investigate the characteristics and essential requirements of P2P streaming systems, we first undertook an in-depth measurement study of a popular P2P IPTV system with passive and active measurement methodologies. Second, we prototyped various streaming designs and conducted extensive comparison experiments on PlanetLab test-beds, which provides us with valuable quantitative answers regarding the sensitivity of P2P streaming performance to different design mechanisms.

Enlightened by the insights drawn from our measurement and experimental studies, we identified several important problems in various P2P streaming systems and proposed corresponding solutions. For live streaming, we proposed a hierarchically clustered streaming framework and developed an adaptive queue-based chunk scheduling method to achieve optimal streaming rate. Moreover, we studied a pure P2P strategy to enable bandwidth constrained end users to host their own broadcast channels. For video on-demand, we proposed a novel mesh-based peer-assisted VoD system. Our system not only adopts a dynamic buffering-progress-based peering strategy to achieve high P2P sharing efficiency, but also applies a differentiated pre-fetching design to balance the system-wide QoE and service differentiations among heterogeneous peers. Finally, for video conferencing, we analytically studied optimal bandwidth sharing in multi-swarm multi-party P2P video conferencing systems. We studied two cross-swarm sharing scenarios systematically under a utility-maximization framework. Through proximal approximation and decomposition, we developed distributed algorithms for joint source rate control and helper bandwidth allocation to drive the system to the optimal operating point.
