Most contemporary studies on information privacy paid little attention to the role that a specific situation plays in regulating behavioral outcomes. The main objective of this study is to examine, from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, the role of situation awareness (SA) in the context of information privacy.

In this dissertation, we first review the classical definitions of information privacy and summarize the different constructs proposed by researchers in relation to online users' information privacy concerns. We then discuss the need for linking privacy to SA. We propose a new construct, Information Privacy Situation Awareness (IPSA), which is a specialization of SA with emphasis on information privacy, and we develop a measure and items for IPSA within a social networking context. Finally, we propose and test a research model in which the proposed IPSA construct is specified as an important mediator as well as a moderator variable. The results confirm the significance of IPSA within an augmented causal model of online information privacy concerns. IPSA shows a significant association with Information Privacy Concerns and Perceived Risks. It also has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between Perceived Risks and Perceived Benefits.

The major contribution of this study is the conceptualization of IPSA and the understanding of its implications to online information privacy. Incorporating the concept of situatedness helps capture the situated aspects of information privacy and thereby addresses a major gap in extant privacy research. The results of this study have several practical implications for both service providers and individuals. The instrumentation of IPSA provides better insights into designing privacy-enhancing user interfaces, powerful help features, and privacy alerts, besides helping to build an effective user training program. Also, the strong relationships between IPSA and Perceived Risks, and IPSA and Perceived Benefits make enhancing IPSA, and thereby reducing privacy loss incidents arising from human error, a high priority for social network service providers, to minimize damage to their brand name.
