Thesis (Ph.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2010.
This dissertation is based on a study of leaders in a Guatemalan Mayan community who applied Linda Tuhiwai-Smith's indigenous research, which was informed by John Heron's collaborative inquiry, in writing a curriculum book about their community's history of transformation. They investigated the processes by which the village of Panimatzalam transformed from a community of indentured laborers to a nexus of cooperatives and an indigenous middle school system. They also looked at the themes of transformation throughout this history, and their own transformation through their experience of the inquiry.

The goal was to work with these indigenous leaders, addressing three challenges in the existing literature on indigenous collaborative writing. The first was that outside academics controlled the process -- there was a need for indigenous leaders to take the lead. The second, was that educators were driving the process; there was a need for indigenous leaders to take control. Third, there was a need to focus education on economic development processes in order for youth to stay at home, securing their future.
