Boar taint is as an unsavoury, 'urine-perspiration-like' odor which occurs when fat from some boars is heated. In recent years, investigations have focused on alternative methods besides castration for controlling boar taint; however, little is known about limiting the concentration of androstenone through nutritional methods. The efficacy of binding by cholestyramine, activated carbon, tween-60, bentonite and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone to radiolabeled androstenone, estrone, and estrone sulphate was measured from buffer solutions in an in vitro system. The results of the in vitro experiments indicated that activated carbon, cholestyramine and tween-60 had the greatest potential to bind steroid hormones in vivo. Activated carbon significantly reduced the levels of androstenone in plasma and fat and plasma estrone sulphate. Tween-60 treatment decreased the levels of plasma androstenone significantly. Skatole plasma concentrations did not vary for any treatment diet. Thus, activated carbon and tween-60 can depress levels of androstenone in both plasma and fat of entire male pigs.
