This study determined the effect of fertility treatments and long-term tillage practices on extractable soil phosphorus (P) and cotton yields. Post-harvest soil was sampled at 0--15 cm and 15--30 cm in 2005 and 2008. Tillage treatments were: conventional, moldboard, minimum till, and no-till. Conventional tillage showed the least soil P in all years sampled. Conservation tillage systems (MT, NT) produced the highest soil P at the 15--30 cm depth. Yield responses to P fertilizer rates varied during the years studied, with the greatest tillage effect on yield for CT and MB treatments. Soil P by Mehlich III was greater than extractable P by the Olsen method. Environmental factors affected yields between years more than did tillage and P combined, leading to the conclusion that the tillage and P treatments in this study were not the primary controlling factors for cotton production on this calcareous soil in south Texas.
