Sorbaronia is a natural, interspecific hybrid in family Rosaceae. It is a robust shrub with botanical attributes and appearance that qualify as an ornamental plant for the horticultural trade. An efficient and reproducible system has been developed to provide a sustainable line of clones. In vitro propagation is necessary due to the scarcity of stock material. Through the development of micropropagation protocols, suitable media for initiation and culture were found. Plant growth regulator levels were optimized for nodal development and rooting. Meristem culture was effective in elimination of contaminants. Optimal multiplication was on Murashige/Skoog medium with 1 BAP mg L-1 and 0.2 mg L -1 IBA. The most effective medium with respect to rooting Sorbaronia was half-strength MS with 0.2 mg L-1 IBA. A similar study conducted on Sorbus koehneana showed half-strength MS with no auxin to be best for rooting. Rooted plantlets were successfully transplanted and acclimated to greenhouse environment.
