This dissertation investigates the influence of travel on Boston's intellectual and cultural history from 1865 to 1914. Contrary to the historiography which has depicted Boston as a city in cultural decline during this era, and the long-standing American prejudice against the value of Americans' travels abroad, this dissertation asserts that an important group of artists, writers, and architects with connections to Boston used travel to invigorate their work. In so doing, they injected an important influence of cosmopolitanism into American cultural and intellectual history. Their type of cosmopolitanism is defined as the disposition to see one's native culture as just one branch of human culture in general.

520 $a The dissertation addresses two central elements of the history of the Boston Cosmopolitans. Part One investigates the foundations of cosmopolitanism by looking at how this cosmopolitan group of friends and associates began and evolved. This section examines two important influences on their work: their membership in a cosmopolitan network of friends and associates in Chapter I, and travel in Chapter II. Chapter III takes a close look at how these essential elements of cosmopolitanism---travel and a network of friends---came together in a voyage that Charles Eliot Norton took from Great Britain to Boston in 1873. Chapter IV examines how the Cosmopolitans used travel as a tool in their creative work. Part Two examines how their cosmopolitan experiences translated into art (i.e., painting and sculpture), architecture, and literature that was intended to have an impact on the American public.
520 $a The most important sources used in this history were biographies and biographical studies, correspondence, and the artistic products created by these artists and writers. Careful examination of these sources revealed the rich interdisciplinary types of collaboration that energized much of the work of the Boston Cosmopolitans.
