My dissertation examines the life and career of the British artist Robert Robinson (1651--1706). The chance survival of several decorative schemes by Robinson makes it possible to examine the aspirations of this artist who, although not among the upper echelon of Restoration painters, was a prominent member of the Painter-Stainers' Company and a true pioneer in the fields of decorative painting as well as mezzotint engraving.

Robinson's importance lies chiefly in his role as an advanced proponent of chinoiserie in English decorative painting, but his activity as a painter of easel pictures, stage painter, and printmaker have never been integrated into a fully inclusive study. This dissertation reconsiders Robinson's better-known decorative schemes, while focusing on his less familiar activity as a still life painter and mezzotint engraver.

The introductory chapter outlines the state of the literature on Robinson and the early English mezzotint, followed by four chapters which give a full account of his life and career. Chapter 2 brings together newly compiled archival information in an attempt to flesh out details of Robinson's biography and his professional association with the Painter-Stainers' Company; original documents are transcribed in Appendix I. Chapter 3 consists of a study of his painted oeuvre, including a consideration of his stage designs and possible involvement in tapestry design. Appendix II contains a list of Robinson's paintings appearing in London auction catalogues between May 1689 and March 1692. Appendix III is a transcription of set descriptions from Elkanah Settle's The Virgin Prophetess, for which Robinson painted the scenery in 1701.

Robinson's mezzotints, which are fully catalogued in Appendix IV, are the focus of the final two chapters. Chapter 4 begins the study of Robinson's printed oeuvre with a discussion of the nascent mezzotint publishing industry in London during the 1680s, followed by an analysis of his technique and style which is essential to the reconstruction of his oeuvre. Chapter 5 considers the function of non-portrait mezzotints in seeking to explain their efflorescence and disappearance, and ends with a contextualized survey of the various genres in which Robinson and his contemporaries worked.
