Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2010.
This study investigated the influence of social network characteristics (i.e., size, proportion of local contact, closeness, density, and frequency of contact) on expatriates' adjustment (i.e., general, interactive, and work) of Thai nationals in the Lao PDR and Indonesia, in order to develop broader insights into two underexplored business regions in Southeast Asia. On the basis of theoretical linkages among the constructs, a conceptual model and propositions were established. The sample of 135 was drawn from two Thai firms; one operates in the mining and energy industry in Indonesia, and the other in the construction business in the Lao PDR.

On the basis of theoretical linkages among the constructs, a conceptual model and propositions were established. Descriptive analysis was employed to explore the extent of expatriates' adjustment, as well as the structural and relational characteristics of their social networks. To investigate the relationships between adjustment and social network variables, the quality of factor structures of the adjustment variables was assessed by an overall confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was also employed for the purpose of data reduction and of maintaining the strongest factors. The hypothesized structural model was tested and compared against the two nested alternative models. The hypothesized model was rejected and the alternative model that emphasized the significance of the closeness variable was found to be the best-fit model. For model selection, the goodness-of-fit, the estimated parameters with theoretical relationships, and the law of parsimony were applied.

The results suggested that, overall, Thai expatriates in both Indonesia and the Lao PDR moderately adjusted to the local cultures. There were more males than females in the overall network that turned out to be of high density as social partners were mostly colleagues who conversed on a daily basis at work. As for the relationships between social networks and cultural adjustment, all the path coefficients were weak although the feeling of closeness was found to be statistically associated, directly and positively, with all three measures of adjustment. The demographic variables and language proficiency skill were also found to assist Thai expatriates' adjustment in the two contexts explored in this study.
