Few if any academic studies have concentrated on the skills and knowledge needed by the director of a public library. This study surveyed the public library directors in the state of Illinois to determine what practitioners working in the field felt were the skills and knowledge needed to do their jobs. The survey collected practicing library directors' opinion of the skills and knowledge they felt were needed to succeed in their position and demographic information about their library and themselves. The study demonstrated that there is no significant correlation between the demographics of the library or the individual director. The study also shows that a strong relationship exists between the skills and knowledge needed by the library director and that needed by business managers and leaders in business.
