Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2008.
This dissertation examines the life and career of Elonnie Junius (E.J.) Josey using oral history interviews with E.J. and his contemporaries, as well as primary sources from the American Library Association, the University of Pittsburgh Archives, North Carolina Central University, School of Library Sciences and Josey's own personal files. As a child, Josey exhibited qualities that exemplified the tenacity that defined his character throughout his life. During his career, which spanned over forty years (1952-2002) he worked as a librarian (1953-1966) and administrator of library services (1966-1986), and as a professor of library science (1986-1995). He also served as President of the American Library Association (ALA) in 1984. His achievements include successfully passing a resolution that prevented state library associations from discriminating against African American librarians, being a founding member of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), and successfully leading challenges against discriminatory practices towards African Americans and other marginalized groups in the ALA. The focus of this research is to examine the life and leadership of Josey, whose influence on the policies of ALA is of great significance to the history and the future of the profession. Central to this investigation are questions relating to the impact of external historical factors of inequity, segregation and the civil rights movement. The overarching research questions explored are: What is the impact of Josey's leadership on the Library and Information Science profession? In what ways did he transform the profession? Exploration of these questions offers unique insights into the historical and political landscape of the ALA. This historiography is targeted to researchers in LIS, students of information studies, librarians and historians.
