Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2011.
Researchers have used critical success factor (CSF) analysis to examine activities across a multitude of industries. Previous investigations focused on information systems planning and requirements, virtual project teams, Department of Defense program and risk management, Catholic elementary school management, strategic decision making of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and success activities of Black financial managers among others. This study successfully applied the CSF approach to the recording industry. The researcher customized Stroman's (2007) critical success factor category (CSFC) analysis method used in " The Critical Success Factors of the Atlantic Coast Conference: A case Study from the Perspective of the Conference Leadership" to generate CSFs of recording artists working at the major music label level from the artist managers who represent them. Fifteen artist managers participated in a structured interview that served as the primary data collection instrument for this qualitative collective case study. Managers identified 381 CSFs across eight success activity categories including Global or Industry Related, External Influences, Internal Influences, Risk Reduction, Performance, Cultural Influences, Market Influences, and Creative Influences. The inquiry resulted in the identification of the artist manager's strategy, artist's personal characteristics, music industry knowledge, marketing activities, and radio-related activities as the top five CSFs for professional artist managers. The researcher recommends further application of CSFC analysis to the music industry by replicating this study using a wider manager population as well as applying this approach to both recording artists and music label executives.
