Telecommunications and cyber technology have brought us to a workplace crossroad. Information and communication technology (ICT) is recreating organizations into dispersed enterprises, thus altering the boundary between work location and personal space, and re-imaging the conception of the worker. Managers are faced with ethical dilemmas arising from business cultures characterized by speed, efficiency, competitive advantage, and a cost-efficient and limited resource operational mentality, as well as the notion that workers are expendable commodities. Ethical concerns surround organizational perspectives and practices associated with the 24/7 workplace approach, including communication procedures employing ICT, work demands, and expectations regarding employee availability. Growing acceptance of "anytime" communication and collaboration is augmenting managerial power, thus blurring the separation between work and personal life. There is mounting concern about how job expectations and stresses negatively impact employee's health and livelihood.

Telecommunications and cyber technology have brought us to a workplace crossroad. Information and communication technology (ICT) is recreating organizations into dispersed enterprises, thus altering the boundary between work location and personal space, and re-imaging the conception of the worker. Utilizing an interpretive-analytical toolkit methodology, and deploying the cyborg image as an interpretive lens, this research revealed that contemporary business enterprises are cyborg organizations, human-machine entities that are adaptive intelligent cyber-socio networks, and that the workplace is a digital sociotechnical environment where knowledge workers are cyborg workers---24/7 information processing entities. Next, this interpretive-analytical study formulated a constructive postmodern character ethic perspective to identify ethical issues related to ICT and 24/7 workplace connectivity, and to construct recommendations to address them. Research revealed that appropriately designed and implemented digital information and communication systems (1) enhance worker dignity, (2) foster employee well-being, (3) safeguard worker rights, and (4) promote appropriate use of organizational power. Applying these values to the practice of 24/7 connectivity indicate a need for increased awareness by business and information systems professionals of ICT's ability to mechanize employees, and the importance of reestablishing boundaries between the workplace and personal life, revising current communication practices, and decreasing employees' need to be accessible 24/7.

These findings can assist organizations in developing cultures, human resource philosophies, and managerial practices that authentically value employees, advocate work-life balance and worker well-being, and promote ICT use that expands employee capabilities in a manner that improves the quality of work performance and productivity, while enhancing the meaningfulness of the work experience.
