C.P.E. Bach is regarded as one of the prominent composers of the Pre-Classical period. He composed nearly one hundred fifty-five keyboard sonatas, and his early and late sonatas show a transformation from the Baroque to the Classical style. Hired to be a keyboard player for the court orchestra of Frederick II of Prussia in Berlin, Bach was associated with Europe's best musicians and music theorists of the time. The Empfindsamkeit Stil , as known as the "sentiment style," flourished among Bach's contemporaries, as an attempt to seek a break away from the past.

520 $a Bach's early sonata, Wurttemberg Sonatas, shows his departure from the Baroque polyphonic style with the influence of the Empfindsamkeit Stil. Yet, one will still find a strong influence of the Baroque in these sonatas. On the other hand, the late six sonatas, written in his later years, show much closer relationship to the Classical style.
520 $a Recent studies show an increasing interest in the analysis of Bach's compositional style, yet an in-depth comparative study of his keyboard sonatas has thus far not appeared. To understand the transformation of Bach's musical style, this dissertation focuses on both the analysis and a comparison between Bach's early set of the Wurttemberg Sonatas, and six of the late sonatas from Fur Kenner and Liebhaber.
