As integrated circuit process technologies approach 35nm scale, the available chip area can have upwards of one billion transistors. CPUs are being designed to utilize the additional transistors to provide more processing cores and larger caches. At the same time, new MPPA (Massively Parallel Processing Array) architectures are being developed that utilize hundreds of simpler RISC CPUs, connected by a programmable interconnection network. This research explores the potential for using MPPA architectures as a scalable computing platform for network security applications. The programmability of the processor interconnections allows us to match the parallelism in our applications and also enables easy replication of data to different processors. In this research, we have considered three important network security applications, namely, entropy analysis based malware detection, traffic classification, and encryption. Experimental analysis shows that using 50 on core processors in our MPPA architecture can perform these network security applications to match the network line rate of 1Gbps while maintaining low power usage.
