Relational framing theory is applied to superior-subordinate relationships with the use of leader-member exchange theory and contingency theory as frameworks to evaluate performance differences between leaders. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire including the Least Preferred Co-worker Scale and two versions of the Relational Framing Scale.

Consistent with relational framing theory, both dominance and affiliation were found to be positively correlated with involvement. Results also revealed that high quality exchange relationships produced higher ratings of the affiliation-disaffiliation relevance judgment than low quality exchange relationships. Contrary to expectations, low quality exchange relationships did not produce higher ratings of the dominance-submission relevance judgment than high quality exchange relationships. It is concluded that the application of relational framing theory to superior-subordinate relationships can advance our understanding of relational judgments.
