This project is a multidisciplinary and multimedia exploration that creatively addresses the relationships between space, memory, and personal identity. In it, "home" is a complex and conflicted space that stands in for many competing and at times paradoxical things---for safety and risk, security and hazard, freedom and captivity, memory and forgetting, belonging and alienation. It is informed by philosophy, literature, film, and the power of personal narratives.

The methodological approach taken here has three parts: an investigation into the idea of home that relies primarily on Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space; a survey of modern canonical literature---Virginia Woolf, W. B. Yeats, Margaret Laurence, Annie Dillard, Ivan Goncharov---that features house and home prominently; the creation of a personal film that embodies the reconstruction of home using 8mm "home movies." Through this process, a new sense of self is reconstructed from fragments of memory.
