Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2010.
This study traces the writing and personal development of two Latina first generation college students. Two detailed case studies show how these women moved from being poor writers to proficient, and at times, excellent writers. The data collected includes two retrospective interviews, a large corpus of student texts and the students' academic transcripts. The study proposes a theory that students develop as writers when they adopt a "situated informed perspective" from which to write. The study explains in detail how one develops such a perspective and how adopting such a perspective can be helpful to becoming a proficient academic writer and thinker.
