Software development by nature is a distributed process which requires a group of individuals to work effectively as a team. With the increase in the number of members in a team, the technical dependency increase and effective management of these dependencies demands efficient coordination and collaboration. When these coordination needs are not appropriately satisfied they can be a cause for conflicts as well as delays in achieving the desired project milestone.

In this research, we present an empirical study of a large distributed software project of IBM, the Jazz project. Our study focuses on examining (1) the nature of the structure of work, with respect to the kinds of task dependencies and how they evolve, (2) the effects of these dependencies on task completion, and (3) the incidence of potential conflicts caused because of parallel changes in work and its trend over time. Our results indicate that, although task dependencies introduce delays, careful task planning can significantly mitigate their impact on overall task performance. We discuss our findings, taking into consideration other empirical studies on Jazz and distributed software development.
