The plains topminnow, Fundulus sciadicus, was once distributed from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, north to South Dakota and as far south as Oklahoma. This study reports recent sampling efforts of historic locations across their geographic range. Of the 927 historic records of plains topminnow, 667 historic locations were visited. Topminnow remain at 189 sites (a 71.1% reduction). Additional sampling of 1,119 locations with favorable habitat for plains topminnow located 202 additional locations currently supporting topminnow.

With plains topminnow eliminated from a large portion of their historic range, reintroductions of plains topminnow may be necessary to re-establish populations at historic sites. A population of broodstock plains topminnow was established and monitored between March and October during 2008 and 2009. Stocking of 123 plains topminnow during April and October 2008 produced an estimated population of adult plains topminnows of 9,844 +/- 1,698 with an estimated biomass of 27.7 kg/ha in August 2009.

The wide introduction and spread of the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, has been linked to the decline of small fishes in lower latitudes (30°N-37°N latitude). In the laboratory, mortality in simulated winter water temperatures for five populations of mosquitofish and one population of native plains topminnow was examined. Mosquitofish survival of cold water temperatures ranged from 45% to 0%, while survival of plains topminnows exposed to winter water temperatures was 77.5%. Mosquitofish appear capable of overwintering in Nebraska allowing permanent populations capable of range expansion and potential negative impacts to native species in latitudes above 40°.

Based on reductions in range of plains topminnow and enhanced survival of western mosquitofish, conservation actions including production of broodstock should be implemented. In addition, the global status of the species should be reexamined.
