Little research has been conducted on the creativity of a fiber artist. This study provided information on what influenced fiber artists in their creative endeavors. It also provided an understanding of what inspirational sources a student uses for their project in a Fiber Arts course.

The study revealed that creative people tend to require encouragement and support from groups. Subconscious thoughts of students in a Fiber Arts course influenced a majority of the students. These thoughts are not controllable or acknowledgeable, and therefore students may not know why they chose a certain technique. It was documented that students were influenced by others when applying a technique. As a large portion of the 2009 FCSC 4178/5178 Fiber Arts class members (58%) belonged to Generation Me, they did not feel as though they were concerned with peer judgment, however the researcher believes subconscious thoughts prevailed when the student was actually designing their final project. The students wanted to mimic a person who they perceived as successful. It was usually someone who had a positive attitude towards certain techniques. However, it also had to be a technique which the student saw as achievable during the allotted time period. Unconscious thoughts were found to explain the gap between student's thoughts. Fifty percent of the students mentioned perceiving the techniques as easier to manipulate, thus being the reason why they chose that technique. The students' body language, comments between the students, and the reactions the students received from other students also influenced their decisions.
