Great musicians are surely as much 'made' as they are born. No matter how gifted or brilliant a child may be, only excellent teaching and great effort will allow them to perform with distinction. This is not only applies to piano teaching, but also other instruments, including the human voice.

This project focuses on the piano pedagogy of Samarii Savshinskii who, for forty-seven years (1921-1968), successfully taught several generations of pianists in the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia. Many of his students have maintained successful careers as performers and piano teachers and hold important positions at private music schools and American universities, including the Manhattan School of Music, the University of California, and the Mannes School of Music. Among his students are well-known pianists such as Lazar Berman, Vitalii Margulis, and Vitalii Berzon.

Savshinskii founded the School for Musically Gifted and Talented Children "under the roof " of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in which he was the first director and teacher. He started new programs at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in addition to being there for number of years a highly successful director of the Piano Department. Savshinskii's name was hidden from several generations of professional musicians in Russia and outside of Russia due to political oppressions and the flourishing anti-Semitism during the 1940s and 50s.

This document is based on the research of the extensive writings of Savshinskii, such as his five books on piano pedagogy and numerous articles in the periodicals as well as his unpublished Autobiography. The original part of the research includes interviews of the former students of Samarii Savshinskii with selected five interviews that were translated from Russian.

The current study examines Savshinskii's life and teaching. Several aspects of his teaching style are considered in detail, namely (1) his core ideas on piano pedagogy, (2) his approach to developing piano virtuosos, and (3) his views and techniques in dealing with the most critical psychological aspects of performance. This he considered to be the most important condition of good pedagogy. The final chapter reaches conclusion drawn from earlier material in the document and considers implications for further research.
