520 $a In addition to providing a detailed analysis of the rules of syllabification, stress, linking across word boundaries, and pronunciation of vowels and consonants, this study pays special attention to phonological and phonetic similarities and differences between American English and Castilian Spanish based on articulatory and acoustic comparative analysis. Furthermore, it delineates the Spanish pronunciation traits relevant to lyric diction and necessary to achieve a native level of pronunciation, acknowledges the challenges American singers face, and suggests means to overcome them when studying pieces belonging to the peninsular Spanish vocal repertoire.
520 $a The author highlights the relationship between an idiomatic pronunciation and the social, cultural, and historical aspects it reveals. Additionally, aspects such as the vocal difficulties, the musical context, the acoustical characteristics of the performing hall, the linguistic background of the interpreter, and the different pace of phonetic events in lyric diction are also taken into consideration for the unique approach they impose to lyric diction pronunciation.
