Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, 2008.
Researchers suggested that the internalization of Asian American stereotypes in the Asian American population may result in negative consequences (Sue & Kitano, 1973; Lee, 1994). However, research in this area has been limited by the lack of adequate measures of internalization of Asian American stereotypes to date. The purpose of this study was to examine the stability of the factor structure for the Internalization of Asian American Stereotypes Scale (IAASS; Shen, 2005) as well as to provide additional reliability and validity estimates of the scale.

The IAASS was first shortened based upon the original data collected in the exploratory study by increasing the stringency of the psychometric criteria in order to increase the convenience of the scale for future research use (renamed IAASS-BRIEF). To confirm the factor structure and examine evidence of reliability and validity for the IAASS-BRIEF, 315 Asian American undergraduate and graduate students from university campuses across the nation were recruited to complete an online websurvey consisting of the IAASS-BRIEF, the Asian Values Scale (AVS; Kim, Atkinson, & Yang, 1999), the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM; Phinney, 1992), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE; Rosenberg, 1965), the World Health Organization's Quality of Life Scale Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF; Bonomi, Patrick, Bushnell, & Martin, 2000) and a demographics questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analyses resulted in the confirmation of a second-order factor model of the 21-item IAASS-BRIEF.

Results from the reliability analyses demonstrated high internal consistency and test-retest reliability estimates (across a 6-week period) for the 21-item IAASS-BRIEF. Validity for the 21-item IAASS-BRIEF was established by assessing its relationship with measures of ethnic identity development, Asian values, well-being, and demographic backgrounds. This study failed to establish adequate evidence for discriminant validity using the AVS or concurrent validity using the MEIM for the IAASS-BRIEF. However, concurrent validity for the scale was established through the negative and significant relationship found between the IAASS-BRIEF and the measures of well-being (i.e., RSE, WHOQOL-BREF). Finally, criterion-related validity was established by examining the relationship between IAASS-BRIEF and demographic differences (i.e., major choice, sex). Implications of these findings are discussed, and research limitations and future research directions are presented.
