The central contrast in this analysis is that work is a primary source of identity for white captains of the menhaden industry whereas it is not for black crewman. The implications of this contrast are explored.

The respective work experiences of black and white vessel laborers are examined; it is shown that each conceive of themselves to possess a power and knowledge which proves to be not incidental but fundamental to the work process. That these abilities have been undermined by technology makes them no less compelling; the cultural meanings of work are especially articulated in regard to what workers perceive as the arrogance of machine power.

The relationship between black and white fishworkers is shown to be hierarchical and held together by a dynamic of mutual dependency and control. The authority and control that one category of laborer has over another and vice versa, and the role this has in making work liveable for black and white southerners in the historical period of wage labor, is discussed.
