Thesis (M.A.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2006.
Breastfeeding is similar to other nutritional practices among humans in that variation in its component behaviors is influenced by its sociocultural contexts; in this case the holistic context in which mother and baby interact. Hispanic culture is rightly considered a breastfeeding culture. However, numerous researchers have shown that Hispanic women in the US. have different breastfeeding patterns compared to women in their home countries. This paper examines this complex issue among immigrant Hispanic mothers in Anchorage, Alaska via quantitative and qualitative methods. It attempts to understand the experiences in breastfeeding among twenty Hispanic mothers via grounded theory. This thesis argues, based on findings, that to successfully promote breastfeeding of infants among this population beyond six months requires education (for health care professionals, breast-feeding promotion organizations, as well as for immigrant Hispanic mothers) that addresses the medical/biological, cultural, socioeconomic and emotional realities of breastfeeding among this vulnerable group of Hispanic mothers.
