Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Western Ontario (Canada), 1996.
This thesis explores the dynamics of subjectivity through an examination of the experiences of six women as they have negotiated themselves through the institution of bio-medical obstetrics during their time of pregnancy and birth. The heteroglossic nature of subjectivity is explored through an investigation into cultural expectations of pregnancy and birth and a third theoretical space between science and culture is proposed. Narrative is used as both theory and methodology. Subjective experiences of birthing women are situated within current debates in medical and socio-cultural anthropology: the role of science and medicine in contemporary society; the role of symbolic practices in the constitution of self and the production and reproduction of social realms; the body as both the site of creative experience and of domination and exploitation; and the holding of everyday experience as central to ethnographic practice.
