520 $a Focus is on the evolution of agricultural wage relations and of the cultural terms applied to them following the development of the district's irrigation and settlement complex in the 1950s and during the more recent period of the 1980s. Based on fieldwork conducted in the District in 1986-1988, and drawing on a combination of ethnographic and historical materials (archival sources, household budget and agricultural surveys, interviews with officials, life and labour histories, and the results of participant observation in one village) the study shows how local processes of differentiation and class formation put in train in the 1960s were broadly similar to those observed in the 1980s, but that conditions specific to the 1980s, including the movement of small-holders to produce more efficiently for market and a rise in the proportion of district residents without access to irrigated land, brought shangaan peasants together as employers and workers in ways that challenged socio-cultural precedents.
520 $a Evidence of appeals to powerful territorial spirits in support of the claims of poor peasants is presented here, framed by an account of an historical connection between labouring and the constitution of social and cultural identities in the region. A principal conclusion is that cultural terms that were deployed during earlier periods were mobilized by shangaan peasants in the 1980s in order to both distinguish between people and productive relationships and to create differences and power domains.
