Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 1996.
In the alcohol literature, conceptions of alcohol consumption (viz., drinking behavior and its consequences) have been inconsistent. Caetano (1992) has identified this inconsistency as one of the great methodological problems that plagues the study of problem drinking. In this study: first, several Western, psychosocial models of problem drinking are presented. Second, the literature regarding the dimensionalization of alcohol consumption is reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of Russian concepts of problem drinking. The results of three exploratory factor analyses (using maximum likelihood, image analysis, and minimum residual methods of factor extraction) of a set of alcohol consumption items are presented fourth. And, last, a structural equation model (SEM) relating the dimensions of alcohol consumption identified through the exploratory factor analyses (viz., Quantity, Access to Alcohol, Frequency of Being Drunk on the Job, Social and Occupational Consequences of Drinking, and Physiological Dependence) to a number of demographic (e.g., ethnicity), sociological (e.g., socioeconomic status), and personality (e.g., anomie) predictors is delineated. ftnSubjects--Topical Terms:
