The present study is organized in two parts. The first, or main text, presents the primary data of a life history project. It is the history of a trade, bata drumming, told through the life of one of its practitioners Felipe Garcia, a Cuban refugee, Santero, Palero, Abakua, artist and priest. Felipe's biography is marked by events that are in themselves of historical significance: the Cuban revolution and it aftermath, and the story of migration in the United States.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The main text is organized into three parts: the first collects background information and deals with Felipe's formative years. The second covers the critical years of the Cuban revolution from the point of view of Felipe qua musician and religious element. The third part deals with the events of Felipe's life as a refugee/immigrant in the United States. The recurrent theme, during the three period of Felipe's life, is his trade and his passion: drumming.

The parallel text serves to provide a historical context, to offer background information and to elaborate on theoretical issues. A history of slavery in Cuba is outlined, followed by an account of the various Afrocuban religious practices, and the history of the bata drums. It then focuses on questions that have affected the life of Afrocuban musicians like Felipe after the Cuban revolution by examining topics such as the professionalization of musicians, the cultural policies and the theatralization of folklore, race, religion and the impact of tourism on religious Afrocuban music.

In the last section the focus on an individual musician serves as a lens to examine the experience of immigrant/diasporic musicians in the United States, the way music shapes memory and the role music plays in rebuilding an indentity in a foreign land. The encounter of two musical worlds--the researcher's and Felipe's--is explored and other musicological issues related to the Afrocuban repertoire are examined. Extensive organological information on the various types of Afro-Cuban drums is provided in keeping with the premise that instruments themselves have a history to tell and play an important role in articulating and giving meaning to experience.
