This dissertation is a study of social change, especially economic change, occurring for the people of Kerowagi District, Simbu Province, Papua New Guinea. Associated with the introduction of the capitalist economy have been many other changes, including formal education, cash cropping, and an increase in the division of labor. These changes have not occurred uniformly throughout the region of which Kerowagi is a part, nor have individuals within Kerowagi been equally affected by these changes. I propose that models developed to describe the economic differentiation associated with the change from a non-capitalist to a capitalist economy are inadequate to understand the economic and wider social change that is occurring in Kerowagi.Subjects--Topical Terms:

These people live in a rural area in which the impact of their incorporation into the money-dominated, supralocal economy is mitigated by kin oriented social/economic ties, the limited availability of non-farming, salaried work, and a land situation which restricts individual control and accumulation. I reject, however, the possibility that Kerowagi is an unchanging "backwater" or that no economic change is occurring. By investigating several arenas of differentiation (in particular differences in education, experience with the non-traditional economy, views of prestige associated with occupations, and the varying economic practices of migrants and non-migrants), I conclude that the people of Kerowagi are affected by the economic forces which create social and economic stratification elsewhere, but that for Kerowagi people these changes have been restricted by local conditions.
