The current literature shows a gap between user needs and what is currently being provided by web-based digital library electronic services (e-services). The research described in this dissertation explored this phenomenon to an understanding of user perceptions of web-based e-services about which little is known. The purpose of the study was to formulate a qualitative phenomenological description of the essential structure of end-user computing satisfaction. The research addressed this gap, by inclusively involving a sample of 20 International Planetary Society (IPS) members having a wide spectrum of IT abilities, and soliciting their lived experiences, perceptions, and opinions of web-based e-services. A digital audio recorder recorded the responses using open-ended research questions. The study had three core themes: Fast and Effective, Improved Reference E-Services, E-services Tools Meet My Needs. The participants acknowledged that information technology investment positively impacts their productivity. Two participants observed a negative impact on productivity at first when discussing the early use of the Google search engine, but with time a positive impact on productivity was achieved. Participants felt that even though the current state of web-based e-services has greatly improved over the past 10 years, there is still room for greater speed, greater data file server storage, and enhanced operational navigation systems for significant improvements to enhance research productivity. Some improvements mentioned were site navigation and icon design, increasing the refreshing imaging from the remote observatories, and no matter how fast e-services are today there is always room for faster document recovery.

520 $a Potential opportunities for future research include expanding the current study to international countries to determine if the patterns described here are generalizable across the astronomy population. The second recommended research study would compare the criteria used by astronomers and astrophysicist using web-based digital data libraries. A third recommended research study is more research is needed concerning the relationships between information quality and use, user satisfaction, and net benefits. A fourth recommended research study would involve future research applying comprehensive and consistent measures of use in order to better understand the effect of use on end user satisfaction and net benefits research study.
