Using a cross-sectional research design, this dissertation sought to examine the extent to which the aspirations---one's desires, hopes and dreams for future educational, career, family and social goals---could serve as a protective factor against adverse outcomes with a convenient sample of 182 African-American youth residing in public housing. Using several statistical procedures, the results revealed that aspiration had a moderating effect on the relationship between risk factor (exposure to violence) and adverse outcome (delinquent behavior). The results also revealed that among the psychological, sociological, environmental, and demographic predictors of aspirations, parental influence, particularly, maternal encouragement was the strongest predictor of youths' aspirations and explained six percent of the total variance (total variance = ten percent). Implications for social work and recommendations for future research are presented.
